Club review: The Cellar

Thumbs up.

Citysearch says this is the second trendiest club in the City.  I hope not.  It was trendy, it was cool, they had two dance floors with real DJ's spinning good songs, and I got myself and my friends in on the guest list with free cover before midnight.  Also nice location, down by Union Square, near other cool restaurants and clubs (such as Le Colonial, which is awesome).

So what's wrong with it?  First of all, it was way too crowded.  But I can't blame them for that; we tried to fit the entire 1,200-student school into a club that was not built to hold that many people.  (I'm not sure the entire school was there, but it seemed like it.)  I do blame them for letting it fill up too much.  Also, the VIP line got pretty long and it looked like they were letting people from the regular line in first.  If they were that crowded, they should have just turned the non-VIP's away.

Also, it's overrated.  It's fun, but it's not the be-all and end-all of clubs.  It's no On Broadway.  I'm still looking for an On Broadway in SF.  Come on, we're a cool city, we should be able to manage something like that.  I heard someone say that the Gaslamp in San Diego is like a small chunk of a boring neighborhood in SF.  If we've got so much darn culture, how come we don't have better clubs?

Anyway, I did enjoy myself at The Cellar, and I'd be willing to go back.  But I'm still looking for something better.
