Here's your sign.

That's a reference to Jeff Foxworthy, a comedian who says that stupid people should wear signs.

SAN JOSE / Couple rescued after being lost 5 days in Santa Cruz Mountains / Newlyweds had no food, slept in cave, hollow tree, yet OK

Mistake #1: getting off the trial.  Never mind the fact that it's dumb; you're also harming the forest.
Mistake #2: wandering farther away from the trial.

Mistake #3: not bringing a cell phone.

Mistake #4: sitting on your ass for five days.  The very next morning they should have climbed back up the hill.

This reminds me of the Blair Witch Project.  I couldn't feel sorry for those kids because they were such frigging idiots in the forest.  "Let's only bring one map.  And get it wet.  And lose it." etc. etc.  By the end I was cheering for the witch.

Oh yeah, and I've been to that park, the reason their car was outside the park is that the computer programmer was too stingy to pay $5 to the park service, so he parked outside the entrance and walked in.
Why is our society so forgiving of all these stupid people?  "Oh, these poor people, stranded for five days with no food.  Gee, they sure are resilient."  I've gone hiking many times, this has never happened to me.  There's a reason for that.
