IDIC

Google did something cute today.  I use Google Calendar as my own calendar (of course it syncs with my blackberry), and today I noticed they added something:

stardate

Yes, they added "star dates" to each day, in honor of the new Star Trek movie coming out today.  There have been a lot of positive reviews of this new movie and I'm excited to see it.

Of course, there have been a lot of debates over how "star dates" work, since (a) they seem internally inconsistent in the original series (TOS) and by The Next Generation (TNG) they had added an extra digit.  There have been different systems proposed but none actually work.

Still, I think this embodies the spirit of the new Star Trek movie.  There are going to be LOTS of things that don't fit with the pre-existing cannon after six shows and ten movies, but frankly the Star Trek universe was never very consistent in the first place.  This ain't Star Wars, which has an incredible level of consistency even over the third-party books that have been published.  Fans who get caught up in the spots on a Trill are frankly wasting their time.  (Guess what: the original Trill didn't have spots at all.  Get over it.)  The point is the spirit of what Star Trek represents, plus some neat characters, fun plots, and occaisionally some real philosophical depth.  Doesn't matter if you get the Star Dates correct, it's still fun.  So, I'm enjoying seeing Star Dates in my calendar and I suspect I'm going to enjoy the movie too.

All right, now back to packing.  Moving tomorrow.  Looking forward to the new place, but moving is such a pain in the ass . . .

PS: "IDIC" is a Trekkie thing.  If you don't get it, don't worry about it.

PPS: My moving boxes say "Don Farr" on them.  Is it weird that that reminds me of a Vulcan mating ritual?
