Moview Review: Poison

Thumbs down.

Low-budget thriller about a woman whose husband gets fired and then commits suicide.  She blames it on his replacement a hot blond, insinuates herself into the new woman's home, and procedes to wreak havoc.

Never mind the lousy acting and dialogue.  This is a sexual thriller so those aren't surprising.  But the plot was boring.  Most of the tension came not from the evil woman lurking in this family's midst, but from discord in the family itself.  When things fall apart, it's not clear whether the woman caused it, or whether she's just taking advantage of the situation.  And then, once the blond woman is dead, it's not clear why the antagonist stays around to get found out.

The movie features Kari Wurher, an attractive B-list actress.  I first noticed her in a video game I used to play.  That's how much cache she has.  But the movie isn't even worth seeing just for her; there's lots of sex, but she only gets naked once.  I keep wondering how all these people are having sex with their underwear on.  Several other people get naked, but it's all gratuitous, and there's a clear use of "stunt doubles" in the sex scenes.

Just out of curiousity, I watched the last 15 minutes of the film with the director's commentary on.  He and the cinematographer just snickered a bunch (especially when there was a woman onscreen) and talked about how they cut corners in the production, and how they wish they'd done certain things better.  As the credits ran, he said, "Thanks for renting this DVD.   And if you bought it, well, God bless you sir!"

I can't imagine making a living producing works of art I know are crap.
