New Year's Resolution: Mobile Security

Over Rosh Hashanah, I saw a girl get her cellphone stolen.  It was a fancy new iPhone and I asked the police if they could track its GPS, like in the movies, and they said no - unless it had one of those anti-theft apps.  That made me realize I need one of those apps.  And so do you.

I actually installed one of those apps when I first got my Droid two years ago, but after various reinstalls it's no longer there.  The app was Mobile Defense, and it looks like they're not taking new customers now, and wouldn't even let me reinstall.  So, poo on them.

A little research showed me that the most popular app for such things is Lookout - by a mile.  And I can see why.  Not only can you see where your phone is, and tell it to "scream" so you can find it, but it also includes antivirus and backup utilities.  All for free.  Yes, there is a premium version that contains more features, like remote lock and wipe, but if you're not already locking your phone then you are crazy.

The app is available through the Google Market (app store), of course, and installation is a breeze.

Show of hands: who has a smartphone?  If you just raised your hand, stop reading and get this app.
