News You Actually Care About

I know, most of you don't come to this blog because of my random political rants.  You come for news about the family.  Well, here you go.

Last weekend I went to Duncan's Mills.  This may be my last full weekend CW reenactment of the year.  It was great, I finally got a "real" bugle, which reminded me of how rusty I've become!  I didn't take any pictures, but I did lend my camera to our "camp mom" Judy.  She took some nice photos but I haven't had time to go through them yet.

Nathan's doing great.  He'll be starting a new solid food today: sweet potatoes.  So far he's eating rice cereal, oatmeal, prunes, bananas, and apple sauce.  He's seven months old now.  Not quite ready to sit up, but close.  He also likes to get into crawling position, and although he can't actually crawl yet, he can scoot himself across the floor.

Other news . . . we started using the Wii Fit!  We actually bought it several months ago but between my bar study, Yelena's residency, and our crowded apartment, we never had time/space to use it.  Well we finally started and it's great.  I agree with the general consensus that it won't replace a regular gym membership.  But I recently canceled my gym membership; I'm a stay at home dad, can't bring my kid to the gym, and can't take him biking or jogging yet.  And I don't like walking.  What the Wii Fit is good for is people who are under-motivated and could benefit from a light, fun workout at home.  The Wii is shiny and fun and half the exercises take the form of "games."  Also, video games have lots of practice in motivating people and encouraging them to reach higher goals by using meaningless rewards and happy music.  When I complete a mini two-part workout, it gives me a shiny medal and that makes me feel good.  It may be cheap psychology, but it works.

Bottom line: my BMI is going down, my strength and coordination are slowly improving, and I'm having fun.  I call that a win.
