Profiting - Addendum
I forgot to add that the ads also bring enhanced functionality. That's what Yahoo said when they crammed ads into my email, and in their case the argument was that the increased revenue would allow them to spend more money on developing cool features. And yet, somehow, Gmail is still functionally better than Yahoo mail, and with far less obtrusive ads.
But in my case it's true. I've had trouble getting the internal search to work on my website, mostly because my web host won't support chron jobs (it's technical). The solution? A customized Google search that only searches my website. Naturally it's ad-supported, but once again I get the revenue.
The fact that this is bringing improved functionality to the site makes it feel a little less bad. Apparently you agree; so far the votes have been 100% in favor of keeping the ads. Thanks for your support.

PS: I almost forgot--when the Google ads can't think of anything better to do, they run public service ads. Who can argue with that?
