ALA | 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000

Looking down the list, there is no obvious theme.  Sometimes it's because the books dare to use the "N-word," but other times you can't imagine what the complaint could possibly have been.  Look through the site a bit and you'll discover that the majority of all "challenges" occur at school libraries, and the "instigators" are parents.  Not organizations, not religions, not the government.  Just stupid parents who want to pretend that their kids don't live in the real world.

But the truth is these parents aren't trying to shield their children from something bad.  They're trying to shield their children from something good.  And their rationale, essentially, is: "I don't know how to help my kid come to grips with the fact that these concepts exist.  So I'll just pretend they don't."  The result?  The kid will find out one day.  And those concepts will just be that much more exciting because they're forbidden.

The bottom line: screw these Nazis who want to censor literature.  Let's read this stuff.
