Meet Me in the Center
A few months ago I posted a link to Frank Schaeffer, who gives an excellent glimpse into the minds of the evangelical religious right. It helped me realize that there is no common ground for liberals and conservatives, unless you're willing to base your arguments in the bible. (I am, but sadly most Democrats are not.)
So, we disagree. Fair enough. That's part of what makes America great, that we have people who disagree. But what if someone takes it too far? Apparently someone is selling t-shirts that say "Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8." That's fucked up. Here's another video with Frank Schaeffer explaining why (fast forward to 1:25):
I've got a lot of friends who belong to the religious right. They're some of the best people I know, and I think their faiths make them better people. Even though I disagree, I respect their opinions. I'd like to ask them, right now, to join me in condemning this slogan.
To be sure, I've said critical things about Republican leaders, especially Bush, Cheney, and Palin. I've said hurtful, unkind things. I've insulted their intelligence and even suggested that one of them might actually be evil. But I have NEVER advocated the death of one of our nation's leaders. And I never will. While Bush was in office, I would have gladly laid down my life to defend the President or even the Vice President. I participated in the democratic process and I didn't get my way but I am still a patriot sworn to defend this country and her leaders, no matter who they are.
I am asking my Republican, Christian, conservative friends to join me in condemning any language that prays for the death of our President.
