Movie Review: Thin Red Line

Thumbs down.

Let's be clear: this isn't a war movie.  In two and a half hours, there was ONE battle.  Not a single shot is fired for the first 35 minutes.

If it's set on Guadalcanal during WWII, features American soldiers, and isn't a war movie, then what is it?  It's a collection of beautiful shots of a tropical island, with philosophical musings of various soldiers in the platoon.  They talk to each other, and they talk to themselves.  It's slow, plodding, and frankly boring.  Thank God I watched it on video so I could keep hitting the fast forward button.

Awesome AT&T tech support

She kept trying to assure me that she wasn't messing with me. You be the judge.

Please wait while we find an agent to assist you...
All agents are currently busy. Please stand by.
Thank you for contacting AT&T Internet Services, my name is Joyce Walter. One moment while I review your information.
Joyce Walter: Thank you for waiting. Again, my name is Joyce. I checked your chat log and I see that you want to set up an email client?

Me: Yes please.
Me: Here's the challenge: I have a lot of folders & filters set up on Yahoo webmail.
Me: Is there an easy way to copy those settings?

"A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN"

Two rants in a single day!  Credit for this one goes to my buddy Jim.
J
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

Anti-Zionism really does = Anti-Semitism

I've been saying this for years. This is the short version; see Thomas Friedman's essay below for the long version.

Two Years

Happy anniversary, Sweetie.

(Actually yesterday, but let's just say the website wasn't my top priority yesterday.)

An experiment

While Yelena was gone for two weeks I decided to grow a goatee. I think it looks pretty good:

goatee

I hate to admit it . . .

But it's true.

Want it in a t-shirt?

Color photography before it existed

It's called autochrome.  You take three black-and-white pictures, one with a red filter, one with a blue filter, and one with a green filter.  You use a slide projector to recombine the slides into a single color image.  The technique was invented in 1904, about 30 years before color film.  The result: color photographs you wouldn't expect.  Here are a few sites:

It has to be said

Paris Hilton is a big fucking crybaby who can't handle the real world.

Normally I don't stoop to commentary on the malfeasances of such cultural black holes.  After all, this girl's biggest cultural contribution was to give her boyfriend a blowjob.  But this time I have to speak out because this hits close to home.

More predictions from someone who should know

I previously talked about the "You Will" ads from AT&T in the early 90's and how they were surprisingly accurate--about ten years ahead of time. This time: Apple predictions, 20 years ahead of time.
