Album review: Sandi Thom - Smile It Confuses People

Thumbs up!

Don't look now, but I think we're in the middle of the biggest British Invasion since the 1960's.  Not only are we getting some fantastic music out of the British Isles, but the best music these days is British.  To whit: Joss Stone, Alabama 3, and now Sandi Thom.  These artists have a sound that is more authentically American than the real thing.

Sandi's sound is bluesy and energetic at the same time.  Fun lyrics, good range of styles, and great arrangements.  Her first album has already gone platinum.  Check it out.

A threat! I'm scared!

From my buddy Rob who just finished finals:

Hey Koppie, I'm trying to increase the views of Garrett's video on YouTube. Do you think you could blog it?

If not, I'd understand, though I may have to kill you.

Oh no, a threat! I posted the video, but feel free to try anyway. I'll be waiting.

I live to fight another day

Today I did 165 pages of reading.  That's about 50% more than I've done on any single day since finals started.  Probably more than I've done on any single day during law school.  It took me 14.5 hours, including study breaks.  Approximately 7.5 hours of actual studying time (not including breaks, eating, etc.).  That averages to 22 pages an hour, which is about double what I can usually do.

I might actually fail.

My Corporations final yesterday was brutal.  I'm starting to face the possibility that I may fail a class.  If that happens, I have various options, including going back to law school for one more semester in the Fall.  Not a fun prospect, but I'm not going to give up.

In the mean time I have to keep working.  2 finals down, 2 to go.

Movie Review: Big Girls Don't Cry

movie posterTwo thumbs up!

I don't know how this movie got on our Blockbuster queue. We didn't recognize the director or any of the lead actresses. The only connection was one of the minor characters was also a minor character in Run Lola Run.

The basic premise is two girlfriends becoming teenagers. There's a wonderful combination of little girl activities and sentiments, which give way to more and more adult themes. The characters are richly drawn and compelling.

Why would a guy want to see this movie?

It's a joke (still)

I drove downtown to do four things: pick up my Bar prep materials, sell some old textbooks, pick up my cap & gown, and go shopping.

Well Bar/Bri was happy to give me my bar prep materials but they don't have flash cards for Corporations.  The exam is in less than 24 hours and I need to do some serious cramming.  Still, I lugged home around 30 lbs of books.  I am going to make love to these books for the next two months.

Congratulations Sweetie

My wife graduated from pharmacy school yesterday.  It was a great graduation ceremony.  I took a bunch of pictures, most of which came out terrible.  But I'll post them online anyway.

Now she and her parents are over at my mom's house having a celebration while I grind away at Con Law reading.  Bleh.

Multibutton mouse support in Linux

Do you have a fancy mouse with more than 3 buttons? No? Didn't think so. Stop reading.

Anyone wanna come?

My graduation is on the 20th.  Because Hastings hates spending money on students, they're renting a hall that's too small and they're rationing tickets.  I still have two tickets left if anyone wants in on that sweet, sweet action.

Speak up now, or I'm giving my tickets to a needy classmate.

(Still freaking out about finals)

Linux takes another step

Dell is going to start selling computers with Linux instead of Windows. Here's the announcement. I'll try not to jump on the couches with excitement.

Ubuntu teaser from Dell

Earlier this year Dell did a poll asking what customers want. Turns out they want Linux. Having Dell sell Linux boxes will make a big difference in helping Linux gain acceptance among regular consumers. They haven't actually announced Linux models yet, but they do have instructions on how to install Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. Toshiba is also considering selling Linux boxes. Meanwhile, a Microsoft employee blogs about running Linux at home.

Is this going to be the Year of Linux?
